Changes/Veranderingen

touchdown.jpg

I'm not used to write about my personal life here, at least not when it isn't art/craft-related that is. However there have been some major changes in my life which will result in having less time to spend making beads or do other crafty things.

At the end of november 2009 I learned I was going to loose my part-time job as a secretary, thanks to the financial depression and therefore would be out of a job on March 1st. And so I made some difficult decisions.

Because I felt it didn't work out for me I also decided to stop my own business being a designer of websites and a professional beadmaker and instead go find a job almost fulltime to provide for a steady income. I though this would take a long time since so many people in The Netherlands are on the lookout for new jobs. However in Januari I found this job-add for an office manager of the Touchdown Center in Haarlem (which is an unique office-supplier for independent professionals and small businesses), I was certain this was the perfect job for me and I therefore I applied.

To make a long story short... I got the job and started working there this monday for about 32 hours a week and as a result will have a lot less spare time to do all the crafty things I as I was used to do. This will be a huge adjustment but believe me it sure is worth the sacrifice.

I will continue making beads as a hobby and sell them online, but only to make my hobby less expensive and ofcourse I also will keep on crafting and blogging about it, but less frequent as I was planning on doing. My only hope is I will be able to keep this blog alive enough and therefore worthwhile a visit on a regular basis from all of you ;)

Wishing you a...

2010.jpg

May your days be filled with happiness, good health and a lot of creativity!

Again we had snow and my daughter made this darling little snowman. This time in our backyard so we can enjoy it for more that just an hour of two.

The both of us also baked a lot of traditional dutch pastry for New Year's Eve called "oliebollen" and "appelflappen".

Sneeuwpopje - Little snowman

sneeuwpopje.jpg

My son (on the left) and his friend made this little snowman this afternoon. It's height was about 2.5 meter and the bottompart had a diameter of at least 1.2 meter. My husband, a friend an me helped putting on the middle part.

However for some reason a group of kids appearantly found it a lot of fun to distroy it and take the hat this evening, so the only thing left is this picture and a blocked sideway...What fun...

It's swapping time again...

kerstswap2009.jpg

And yet again I've neglected this blog terrible, all for good reasons but still... so for those of you who have been visiting to find there's nothing but old news, my apologize for the lack of updates. I will do my best to start writing on a regular basis again to make your visits worth!

With Christmas in about a month it's time for swapping again. Every year I participate in Amy's Christmas ornament swap. Over the last couple of years I've received a lot of amazing ornaments due to the fact lot of very talented lady's are participating in this swap. If you concider to participate I have to disappoint you becaus sign-ups are already closed, but at least you can enjoy to look at some of the ornaments right here. This year I designed a star in Illustrator and printed it on Shrinkfilm, cut it out and gave it some large holes and put it in my oven for shrinking. I finished the ornament stringing it on a cord with one of my red and white lampwork beads and I must say I'm really happy with the way it looks.

I also have signed up for some other swaps, so if you are one of my swap-partners you probably will find one of these in your package also ;0)

No glass today...

fruit.jpg

This is what I've been up to today...picking apples and grapes. Our apple tree simply was loaded and so was the grape bush. We made a lot of family, friends and neighbors happy and for the rest of this week I'm sure we will be highly creative consuming the rest ;0)

New design

As you can see I have a new blogdesign. I'm also designing a new portfolio-site for my lampwork which will be in the same style, but that isn't finished yet.

I wanted the blog to have 3 columns so I could divide the blog subnavigation from the viewers and so on. But I'm still not sure if there should be some kind of border between the blog-entries and the other two columns... we'll see.

But for now, the sun is shining, it's weekend and hubby is on holiday also, so we're off to town to do some shopping and visit one of the terraces :)

London flu germs and Administrative Professionals Day

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter with lots of eggs and nice family dinners. We sort of skipped the Easter this year. Both my husband and my oldest had to work and I myself spend most of the day in bed due to the fact my youngest took home some nasty flu germs from his schooltrip to London. Personally I would preferred to receive something dull like for instance a mug with the Tower of London or something, but no that I didn't receive ;)

secretaressedag.jpg

Today when I arrived at work, I also work outside the house for 18 hours a week in a small engineering office nearby, much to my surprise I found this huge beautiful bouquet of flowers cluthering up my desk. As you might have guessed already I work as a secretary and what a good one I am because I totally forgot today is secretaryday. Although maybe that's not really why I did forget, maybe the real reason is that although I appreciate this lovely gesture from my boss, it still feels rather odd that I receive a bouquet of flowers every year and there isn't a special day like such for my only [male] colleque.

Birds Of Change Exchange

BirdOfChange_birds.jpg

Today a package arrived from Arizona with 5 of the most beautiful little handmade birds. I love them all really, but I have to admit there's one that definately is my favorite and I secretly feel Regina aka Mamma-bird put it in my package with the exact same idea. Although maybe that just what I would like to believe, because go look at here blog and see what a pile of birds she had to sort out...I'm impressed. She really did a hell of a job.

Anyway especially because I feel it so fits me, I will tell you which one it is even if you may already have guessed it... It's the beautiful copper phoenix with his flaming wings.
Ofcourse all the other birds will get there special places in my studio, but this little phoenix will have his own special place behind my torch so I can look at it all the time and be inspired!
And just so you know it...it's made by Wendy and she also sells them in her Etsy-shop so go check it out!

Housekeeping...definately not my hobby!!

au.jpgEveryone in my family knows I'm a terrible housekeeper, I hate spending my precious time cleaning house. So if you spot me in the act, don't hesitate to take pictures because no one will believe you otherwise ;)

One of the reasons why I dislike it, is because one way or another I seem to not be able to do so without hurting myself. Mostly minor cuts and bruises, nothing serious but yesterday my day started at the emergency room because our wonderful big new shiny stove, appearantly has this sharp as a knive blade at the back. I'll spare you the rest of the nasty details, but my knuckle hurts and I will end up adding an extra scar to my already large collection... another cleaning action killed in the cradle ;0)

Happy mailday again

mail09012009.jpg

Again my mailman brougth me some lovely presents. Arina, a dutch lady living in Canada is participating in one my lampworking forums. She asked the forum-members to show their Christmas decorations and she rewarded some with lovely prices. Since I wrote about my Christmas tree being decorated with al kinds of handcrafted ornaments received trough several international swaps, she send me this lovely decoration and added a calender with Canadian wildlife pictures as well.

The necklace on the right is from Sol one of my customers. In october she bought one of my beadsets on E-bay but unfortunately it got lost in the mail and she never received it. Although ofcourse I wasn't to blame, I decided to make her a new set and this time send it out by registered mail and luckely this time it arrived savely. Sol makes beautiful jewelry and as a thank you she send me one of her lovely necklaces. So now we're both very happy ;)

Brrrr it's cold outside...

brrrr.jpg

Inside my studio it's almost the same temperature as outside and as you can see in the picture above ice is on the windows so it's pretty cold. I do have an old electric heater but it's almost impossible to get it warm enough to make beads without cracking them. That's why last week I decided to have a temporary stop and enjoy my little vacation.

The last couple of days I spent having long "pyama-mornings", lacy afternoons with a bit of crafting here and there. I also started reading a book and did some browsing the internet, visiting and reading blogs I haven't had time to visit in a long time.

My evenings are even more lacy watching movies on tv, browsing a bit more and simply enjoy familylife.

This all started me to think about the way I've been living my life the last couple of years. The way I have been pushing myself to start new things even before I've finished what I'm working on. In the end this definately results in less joy. So my big plan for the next year is to stop pushing and start enjoying.

Have a nice Eve and be carefull with the fireworks!

Happy mailday

Look what arrived on my doorstep this morning:

CO-01.jpg

A box send by Amy wrapped in a wonderful green paper and inside I found some small packages

CO-02.jpg

It was so much fun to see what's inside those packages... yet again I received some beautiful, lovely and most of all creative and wellmade ornaments. It's such a wonderful group that's participating in Amy's swaps!

CO-03.jpg

I received a totally adorable glittering fairy made by Calamity Kim. I'm pretty sure I will keep this one hanging on my closet after the christmas decorations are gone!

CO-04.jpg

Thanks to Amy and Kim I now know this little fellow is made by Margie.

CO-05.jpg

This beautiful knitted and supersoft ornament is made by Bertha from Karmakitties.com and seeing this made me feel like knitting again :)
Oh and if you're interested she also provides a link to the free pattern she used as a base for these.

CO-06.jpg

This beautiful delicate blue christmas tree was made by Kristin of Kleas. She used the template provided by The small object

CO-07.jpg

And last but certainly not least the totally adorable little sugarplum fairy from Amy herself which came in a beautiful handmade package and as a bonus I received some of her beautiful handmade tags, a christmas card and some craftpapers.

CO-08.jpg

I want to say thanks to each of these wonderful crafters for the beautiful ornaments I received.

Working holiday

At the moment we have summerholiday.

However we do not spent our free time going to the beach or camping in the South of France... No we are working very hard to re-decorate our livingroom and kitchen and when that's finished we need to make space in our backyard to put in an extra shed so I will finally have my own studio.

So in there will not be any blog-entries about beads and such for at least two weeks because I don't have time for playing around ;0)

Diary 2009 project

I am participating in the diary 2009 project, which is a project where artists from around the world design pages to form a diary for next year. Participation is for free, so you don't get paid or a free copy, but I think it's fun and also lovely publicity for my etsy-shop so that's why I joined.

This is the page I designed for the diary...

a new oven...

About eight weeks ago I ordered a special kiln which I not only can use for annealing my glassbeads but also for fusing and small ceramic-projects and some other things I'm planning. Thursday Albert and I went to pick it up and so now I'm able to properly anneal my beads in order to sell them. Haven't had time to figure it out yet but I will soon!

Here's a little peak of my working area:

Now the only thing I really need is a studio in the backyard because my living starts to look like one more and more...

Busy week and lucky swapper

I haven't blogged in a while and so here's a little update...

My webshop is almost finished. I'm in the testing-phase and still taking pictures and writing descriptions for the thinks I'm going to sell there but I hope to announce the opening in a about a week. I know it would have been good business to have it opened say before the December-month but there's only so much a person can do in a day and you can always go check my Etsy-shop if you would like to purchase one of my softies.

This week was dominated by Sinterklaas.
Tuesday we had our own Sinterklaas-festivities with Suprise-packages, special poems and most of all a lot of fun and wednesday like every year on december 5th, I played Zwarte Piet at my kids old primary school. They made up a story about Sinterklaas sending me away on training camp, where I happened to have broken my leg. This because of the fact walking is still difficult and sometimes even painful for me and so I absolutely cannot play Zwarte Piet the way I used to, at least not yet. This year Marjolein also joined us for the very first time, which was very special for me and also a lot of fun!

In the afternoon Marjolein and me also visited some other small kids and after that I was totally shagged out!

swap.jpg
This year I also joined several glass-forums and on one of them someone organized a Sinterklaas-swap I attended. This beautiful "Tigerbead" necklace was my swap present and I'm totally impressed by their size and beauty. Thanks Secret Santa!

Swapping

antonella.jpg

I haven't been much of a swapper. I had one very bad experience about two years ago were I send my parth but never received anything in return and another one in about the same period were the receiver wasn't happy with what they received at all and did a great job in letting me know in a terrible way. These turned me into as you might say a bit swapping-shy person. I always doubt if I can live up to the expectations, am afraid my package will not arrive in time or get lost in the mail.

But seeing some of the swaps going on at for instance Flickr made me realice I need to be brave because I love the idea of swapping with some other craftster/illustrators/artist and I must say the last year I did a few swaps wich turned out great. Not only did I received some wonderful stuff, for what I've heard the receivers where happy too!

This bracelet is a result of a swap with Antonella from Italy. She makes the most beautiful alternative jewelry and I'm so happy with this one she made especially for me!

Homemade tools

homemade-tools.jpg

Here you see some of the examples of some of my more recent cracked beads. I tryed out some new techniques like shaping with my marver and using some of the twisties I have been making. Unfortutely a lot of them cracked. Maybe some of the beads could have been cracked due to stress in the glass because of familymembers walking in and out the door causing drafts. I know the glass I'm using is compatible so that could not be the cause. Well whatever the reason I was searching some of the forums I visit to find tools that could help me prevent it.

What you see here is a tool I made for slowly cooling off my lampwork. The example I found on the forum was made with an aluminium bucket for the exterior but since I work in my livingroom I decided to make it look a bit nicer and used a ceramic flowerpot. Inside is a lamp with a ceramic socket. The intention is to light the lamp when you start lampworking so the vermiculite will be nicely warm and the hot bead will not be cooling down too quickly.

The best way ofcourse is to place the bead in a hot kiln but I don't have one yet...

Holiday fun

theEsveldBunch.jpg
I know I always say I don't talk family on my weblog because it's all about my creative endeavers, but I was browsing through the few holidaypictures I made and I think this one is fun to look at.

Dinner in a restaurant in the south of France, we couldn't translate a big parth of the menu and also the explanation of the friendly waiter wasn't very helpfull because we didn't understand a lot fro what he was talking about. So for most of us it was a bit of a surprise what would be served, the food was wonderfull and we enjoyed it all except for my daughters boyfriend. He's what we call a difficult eater....doesn't like salad with dressings and fancy sauces and raw steak and ofcourse that's exactly what he's got. And with our minor knowledge of the France lanquage we couldn't ask to fry the food some more to make it more acceptable to him, ah well better luck next time ;0)

And just so you know... that's me in the middle with the white shirt. On the left are my daughter Marjolein and her boyfriend Marc. Sitting next to me is Peter who's a friend of us and the uncle of Marc, my son Sander and husband Albert.

New Installation

I've been sick all week with a stomicflue and therefore couldn't sit behind my hothead. I don't have a kiln and would hate to ruïn a bead just because I need to run to the you now what...

Anyway I wanted to change providers for a while and I ordered webspace and registered mariekuniek.com some weeks back. This provider not only is a lot cheaper but also already has proven to have a better helpdesk. The only barrier not to move my other domain was the fact my weblog program was still running there, but not anymore.

As of today my blog will be maintained from mariekuniek.com with a newer version of my blogprogram, for wich the people of the helpdesk were more than willing to install the missing drivers necessary. Something my other provider never wanted to do and not a moment to soon also!

The latest bad action of my other provider is that somehow a domain I registered for future use for the past three years and paid for to be registered till next year also, mysteriously was unregistered without my knowing and without any warning. Trouble is someone else already registered it and so now it's lost totally because they already started using it!

So that's definately the last drop, I'm gone there for sure and as soon as everything here is in order my other domain will be transfered too.

Another decision I made is that I want to drop the name Wolenzo for my weblog. I used it for many years now but it doesn't cover what I'm mostly talking about anymore. In the past when I first started blogging, wich by the way is way back longer than the current blogs archive shows, it was supposed to become a blog about woolstuff and a bit about my other crafts.

But now my interests have changed and developed in some totally different directions and I decided to simply name it weblog.mariekuniek.com and let go of wolenzo. The domain will be linked to this place, it's paid for untill next year althought since it's also is registered through my old provider you never know...

I hope both me and you enjoy it here!

P.s. (june 24th) I'm still working on the change, this afternoon I had to rearange my imagefolder and need to manually correct imagelinks in about more than 150 message you will see missing image signs until I've some time to correct them.

15 juni 2007

Congratulations to my sweet daughter

Normally I don't talk much about my family on my weblog. Primarly because I strongly believe that my personal life should stay personal as much as possible and secondly since this blog simply is my way to share my creative endeavers with people who are interested.

Today I make a big exception mainly because of proud Momma stuff ;0)

marjo.jpg

This is Marjolein. She's the oldest of my two kids and yesterday we heard she graduated from the HAVO (school of higher secondary education). Although she thinks she wants to do something related to art like being an art teacher or interieurdesigner she didn't know for sure yet and therefore will stay on the same school for two more years to do VWO (pre-university education).

So congratulations to you my sweet Marjolein ♥

25 mei 2007

I've been tagged....

And not only once but twice. Luckely for me twice the same tagging so if you don't mind I combine them because normally I don't give in to the tagging business because they remind me to much of chainletters. Those I certainly dislike some might even say hate. Especially the ones telling you bad things are going to happen if you don't do your share or in case of the more friendly typed letters at least you will miss out of the good things that should happen...

Anyway because a sweet blue sheep and Suana tagged me I will give in for a change.

The rules Start with 7 random facts/habits about yourself People who are tagged have to write their 7 things on their blog Then choose another 7 people to get tagged and list their names Don't forget to leave them a comment to tell them they have been tagged and to read your blog

So here are my 7 facts:
1. Secretly I'm lacy, I like to spent my saturday in my pj's and sometimes don't even bother to shower at all (please don't tell anyone ;0) )
2. I love to read novels and prefer to finish my book in one day or two if that's necessary and I also prefer to read in bed...
3. I work as a secretary four mornings a week to earn my share of our living.
4. I'm terrible at math.
5. Since my mid-twenties after discovering my first grey hairs, I dye my hair because I don't like to have grey hair (well secretly I always want to look younger than I am...)
6. I'm not a real snacker but almost every week I like to buy myself a croquette.
7. I envy people who have a tidy, organised and well furnitured house but somehow my house always ends up being a total mess (luckely you aren't able to see my desk right now! I guess having my own atelier/workshop could be a great start but to be totally honest, I seriously doubt that would make any difference.

Dat zeg ik .... G

Afijn geduld is zulk één schone zaak , zucht!

This was still in my foot last week. As you can image I'm a bit lighter now ;0). Sadly according to my doctor it will probably take about 6 months before I will be able to walk a bit like before my accident, sigh!

Botten nieuws

Took me a long time but I finally decided to leave most of my hair at the hairdressers. It's time for a new look...

metamorfose_voor.jpg

And here's the result...ofcourse I also colored my hair to get ride of the grey. I don't mind getting older...I just don't like the grey hair yet :)
metamorfose_na.jpg

P.s. I also decide to write a bit more in my own language but will try to give brief translation as well.

No more!

Saturday I had a booth on a oltimer and craftfair. I don't have photo's to show for it and to be honest I'm glad because to me it was a huge dissapointment.

They placed us in a space wich also was the canteen of the building it was held. Doors were open at both sides of the room so I was sitting in the draft all day and was very cold all day.

Outside the weather was georgious and lots and lots of people came to look at the beautiful old cars parked there but only a few came inside and I think about 90 percent of the people that actually came inside were only interested in buying a cup of coffee and going to the toilet. I'm pretty sure it could have been a great day if only they had placed us in a spot in between some old cars!

So next year they can't count on me because I take myself and my Art serious! And for those that actually did came to look at my stuff and decided to drop by my weblog...thank you so much for doing so!

Back to business

Am I a bad blogger? I probably are but that's mostly because I was away on holiday the last couple of weeks.
Before my vacation I was so busy and spent so much time behind my computer, that mostly I was just happy I could finally leave my screen late at night. I simply didn't feel like reading blogs and forgot to mention here I was going away for a well deserved holiday.

The day after I returned I got the flew and stayed in bed and so that's why after a month and a half I finally find the time to write my blog.

Although I brought my wool and drawing stuff with me I haven't done much crafting or drawing in France. Instead I spent most of my time swimming, reading, sunbathing, walking, shopping, talking with friends and enjoying the wonderfull meals cooked by my husband. Time flew bye, vacation is over and so now it's back to business ;(

Nothing to show from myself yet and therefore two links from artists I think are super:

jengarrido.jpg
Paintings by Jen Garrido, I simply love her style because of the way she's combining colors, textures and covering thinks with white paint.

elinasaari.jpg
Elina Saari... what can I say? To me she simply is a felting guru, I simply love her work especially the designs of her hats and if only it was possible for me to take a felting course from her.

Sadly I cannot read the name of the artist very well, so I'm not able to give proper credits.

I believe the weather will be ok this weekend so I'm planning to spend a lot of time in my garden. There's so much to see at the moment...

BackTack 3

Since my BackTack-package arrived at Stephanie's, I can finally blog about it and show a picture of the finished softie.

I made a Pointy Kitten using Hillary's pattern. Instead of combining several black and white patterns I only used a single striped cotton and attached a flowergarland around her neck using green as the extra color. I placed the name on a small bag the kitten is carrying.

I also decided to send here one of my pincushions as well as some extra crafting materials. She's a real talented lady also, so I'm pretty sure she will like it

I send it all out in a big envelope that I painted and printed with a cat I carved out of an eraser.

Working hard and feeling proud!

OpWhipup.jpg
I am totally excausted... so this really made my day!

The last couple of days I have been behind my computerscreen from 8 in de morning untill midnight, because I had to finish a website for an interior designer. She is having a restylingcampaign in a major womans magazine here in holland, wich will be out today and didn't have a website yet. She's a very demanding customer and it was a real challenge to realise her idea's into a working website! It meant a lot off consultations and working with only small breaks for dinners to make everything the way she wanted. But it's done and I'm in desperate need of getting away of my computer for at least the rest of the day.

Because of all the work I even didn't found the time to email Kate Henderson in order to tell her the wonderfull Backtack-package she made me arrived!

She is also the one who mentioned to me she saw my work on whip up! So I rushed over there to see and I am so proud to see one of my needlefelted art-pincushions and the girly-clown (I'm still working on!) being displayed there. Thanks Kate for telling me and thanks Kathreen for finding my work worth while mentioning there!

kitty.jpg
And here's a little teaser-picture of my finished backtack-softie. I'm affraid instead of arriving before the 10th of June it will be send off at that date but I hope Stephanie can forgive me for that.

I'm closing down my computer for today, I need to package my softie, the sun is shining and my hammock is calling me from the backyard ;)

Buzy girl

kabouter.jpg

I've been neglacting this blog because I was a very busy girl lately. I've got a new cliënt for my webdesign business and I'm negotiatin with another. In between I have been working on some pins and other items to display and hopefully sell on a stand at the "Vrijmarkt" on Queensdag (Saturday). I hope to have some time left today to make foto's to display some of the work I made.

I'm working on this little "kabouter Kleintje" ("gnome little"), wich is based upon stories my mother-in-law used to tell about to my girls.

Speaking of imaginetive persons... Go check this out, I think it's such a wonderful idea...I'm already thinking of places I could make some myself, although I'm pretty sure my kids a grown out of that ;0)

Also two of the pins that were in my shop are sold.

I love my bike

fiets.jpgThis afternoon I was using my brother in law's car to drive Sander to his halfyear hearing check-up at the hospital in Amsterdam. Somehow I forgot to turn off the lights. I needed to be inside for almost an hour and a half and since it's pretty cold at the moment, forgetting a thing like that isn't something you should do right now. So here's what happened next....

Car wouldn't start...I call roadservice....lady on the phone tells me to go to some corner to wait for help and I will get a call on my cellphone when help is about to arrive...I wait for almost an hour with my cellphone in my hand. No one calls and no one arrives. Than yippee I see the roadservice approach I start waving at him...and see him leaving again! So I'm thinking that's not the guy that suppossed to help me and I simply need to wait a little longer..Be patient Marieke help is on the way...

After half an hour I start thinking "what's taking them so long?", so I call again and they tell me I wasn't at the checkpoint, they called but I didn't answer my cellphone and therefore the guy called it off. Appearantly they noted the wrong number... so sorry but we will send someone right away. And yes someone does arrive within half an hour, but before helping me he first needs to help this other lady at the same parking lot because she called in first (right before my second call). So to make it final...

We waited two and a half hours for a guy that helped us start the car in about one minute. This is one of those moments where I remember why I like my bike so much ;0)

Last week I went to the center of commerce in my hometown and as of Januari 1st 1006 I'm registered as Mariek©Uniek. I am planning to combine webdesign with graphic- and needlefelt- designs and want to give both webdesign (wich I already do) as well as creative/needlefelt classes.

Proud Momma

marjo.jpgJust to show that I'm not the only creative soul in the house. Some work from the lights of my life.

Marjolein made this lovely dancer at a workshop at school. It's made of wax and I'm concidering to take it to be casted into bronze. I heared at keramikos wich is a Ceramic centre, there's a workplace somewere in the industrial zone. However the guy I spoke to didn't exactly know where...

Anyway I bought some ceramic paste their because I'm considering to make ceramics bases to combine with my needlefelt. I think that would be a great combination the softness of the wool with hardness of the ceramics. I also bought some more wax for Marjolein so hopefully she will make some more items.

And the funny heads are from Sander . He made them with the ceramic clay I bought. Somehow he's always very unsecure about his skills, I don't know why because I think he did a wonderfull job. When they are dried I am going to bring them to the centre to be baked. So he can paint them with ceramic paint afterwards.

I'm not much a believer in new years planning. For instance the times I planned to quit smoking starting januari first of the new year are several and it never lasted long. I did quit smoking two years ago but that decision was made somewhere in october. Knitting update

breiwol.gif
A little update for my knitting pals, I finished my Noro scarf. To make it more flat I need to block it and instead of fringe I'm going to attach needlefelted pompons.

Also my Mother in Law asked me to buy her some sock yarn and ofcourse I couln't resist buying some more, since they had some beautiful new shades in stock. One is with several brown and blue shades and that's going to be for Albert. The other one has pink/purple shades an is probably going end on my feet when finished, if not on Marjoleins because she has the habit to steal some of my most favorite clothes ;0) .

I already gave Marjolein the Cascading Leaves Socks I finished a week ago and started knitting for Sander. One already is finished and the other one is going fine too, I'm definately not suffering the second-sock-syndrome...

11 december 2005

Christmastree

kerstboom.jpg
Yesterday Marjolein, Sander and me wanted to buy a christmastree. We didn't have the car because Albert had to go to work. So we took our bikes and went to the garden-centre, selected this beautiful tree with roots and delivered it to one of the guys to wrap it in a net.

And this is how it normally goes: you pay for your tree and drive your car around the back to the drive-in they made there, where one of the guys gets your tree and puts it in your trunk. So can you imagine their faces when I biked up there and told them to put the tree on the carrier? I think I made their day...

Several guys came to help and although they were convinced the tree was way to heavy to take by bike, they put it on my carrier and secured it to my back with my scarf. And there I went and although I made a lot of people laugh out loud, I did make it home without any problems! I think next year I will ask them not to wrap the tree but instead put some lights in it ;0)

SPT - Zwarte Piet

piet.jpg
Well I didn't take this picture myself, but this is what I was looking like today.

Once a year I crawl into the skin of "zwarte Piet" during the festivities of Sinterklaas at the primaryschool my kids used to go to. It means playing, singing and dancing along with the little ones. It's nice because most of them aren't afraid of me at all and I received a lot of smiles, hugs and kisses. But this year there also were some older ones that were very annoying. Some of them wouldn't stop trying to pull the bag with sweets out of my hands and there even were some kids trying to pull down my trousers, can you believe that. Apart from those few moments I simply had a wonderfull time!

04 december 2005

Sinterklaas

epiet.gif
It that time of year again, children around here are all very exited because of Sinterklaas. They have been putting their shoes next to the fireplaces in order to receive small giftsand candy in it. On december 5th we are going to celebrate the birthday of this very old and very generous man.

I'm sure there also are people discussing if it's allowed for the Pieten to be black because they think it's a form of racism. Well I'm not one of them...I think it's a wonderful Dutch tradition about giving and it's supposed to be a special time for small children, so let's leave it like that.

Yesterday we celebrated Sinterklaas at our home with our family and friends. We always draw lots and than you have to make a surprise package and a poem for the person you've got. We really had a wonderful time and there were a lot of beautiful and very creative packages.

Today the four of us went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Marjolein complained just a tiny little bit about missing some things out of the book, she herselve would have gave a bit more attention. Well she's allowed to think so but I enjoyed the movie and the special effects and I think they did a wonderful job again. The only thing I find terrible annoying is the fact they almost spent half an hour showing commercials before the film started.

Knitting time

There's still a lot of work going on here at the moment. I want this site not only to be a journal but also some kind of gallery of my feltwork. And since there was a lot of questioning about it...yes in near future I hope to put some of the "pincushions" up for sale.

So if you are interested in buying one of my needlefelt "pincushions" in future, just leave a comment and I will give you notice when I'm ready to sell some of them. Ofcourse it would have been nice if I did it before Christmas but I'm affraid that's not going to happen, sorry :0\ I still have to figure out what's the best way. Using this site or put them on E-bay or something.....

breiblauw.jpg
Sometimes I just need to take a break of work, my computer and sometimes even my needlefelt and that's when I knit. I somehow have difficulties doing nothing and knitting makes me feel really relaxed. The picture shows some of the projects that are in progress at the moment. I'm knitting Birch from Rowan with my all time favorite Kid Silk Haze. The other project are the cascading leaves socks using a pattern from a sockknitting group, but those aren't in progress anymore since I finished them today.

Marjolein started borrowing my knitted striped scarve, obviously she likes it so that's OK. But since it's getting colder I also need a scarve and because I like striped ones too I thought it would be nice idea to knit a new one for myself . So I ordered some NORO at Wolhalla, since it makes such beautiful stripes. Today it came and I already started knitting a bit, can't help myself I'm affraid ;0)

Weekly Reports [01]

A couple of weeks went by without me writing, so here are some highlights from the last couple of weeks:

First of all me and Albert had our 20 years - weddinganniversity last week. It's almost unbelievable... time really did fly by and since we're still very happy together I'm counting on at least twenty years more ;0) We didn't have big celebrations but both took a week of from work to spent time together and went out one night to have a lovely dinner at Grand Cafe Nobel.

I already have given several courses about HTML, Dreamweaver and Photoshop at the adult education centre and must say I really enjoyed doing it. It's not only nice to know I'm capable of teaching others but during the process I learned a lot myself too!

I've also send out my first official offer for making a commercial website but haven't got an answer back yet, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. In the meantime I'm in the middle of designing my own commercial website and redesigning this blog so I don't have to be affraid there's nothing to do keep me busy for now.

I haven't finished my felted Santa yet but I did manage to make some new pincushions but more about that tomorrow. I'm also in the middle of knitting Birch with my all time favourate kid silk Haze from Rowan.

Secret Pal 6

sp6.jpg
Last week I received a package from my secret pal filled with lots of wonderful goodies. I was very happy with the yummie yarn, the wonderful smelling pencil and the flowerpin, but I must say the little sheep in the middle actually made my day. It is a measuring tool wich not only shows cm but inches as well and that's what I wanted to have for a long time!

A fresh start

I needed to update my Movable Type installation and since I'm all into content management systems and MySgl databases at the moment, I thought I would use the MySql database function of MT instead of the static Berkely database and make my weblog a bit more dynamic. Only problem is the new MT needs a database-driver wich my provider hasn't installed yet and is sceduled mid next year. So I guess I have to be patient.

I also wanted to clean-up. My webspace was very cluttered, because of the combination MT with Berkely. It made lots and lots of static HTML pages and most of it wasn't even in use because of changes and so. That's why I desided not to upload my back-up but to make a total new and fresh start instead.
