I don't buy much brooches or other jewelry for that matter, but when I stumbled on the brooches of Jackie Cardy at Flickr last week, I simply had to order one because I totally love the looks of her lovely embroidered felt shapes combined with silk velvet applique. Believe me it already looks beautiful on the pictures but in reality it's simply gorgious! So my advice... make sure to buy some because I think they make wonderful presents!
Normaliter koop ik eigenlijk nooit broches en eigenlijk ben ik ook helemaal geen type voor sieraden, wat natuurlijk best idioot is voor iemand die voornamelijk kralen maakt. Maar goed toe ik van de week toevalligerwijze de broches van Jacky Cardy tegen kwam op Flickr was ik helemaal verkocht. De prachtige viltvormen met de naaimachine voorzien van borduurwerk en geappliceerd met zijdefluweel... echt op de foto's zien ze er al mooi uit, maar in het echt zijn ze echt supermooi. Ik kan je echt aanrader om er één aan te schaffen, want ze zijn niet echt duur en naar mijn idee ontzettend leuk om cadeau te geven!

There are so many possibilities with hotglass that I would like to give a try. One of those is fusing. I already bought myself a (dutch) book to read about the technical stuff and would like to give it a go but unfortunately there's a tiny little problem... I don't have the neccesary glass and honestly glass is very expensive, especially when you need to start and don't have a basic-collection to work from. So for now I will give this idea a rest and start hoping one day the moneytrain comes in :)
And when it does, I wish it would be able to make something resembling like these forms by Valerie Adams. I totally love the graphical style and colors of her work.
Er is nog zoveel op gebied van "warm" glas dat ik zou willen uitproberen. Eén van die dingen is fusing. Een tijdje terug heb ik hier al een Nederlandstalig boek over gekocht, zodat ik me een beetje kan verdiepen in het technische gedeelte en zou het graag in praktijk brengen. Spijtig genoeg heb ik een klein probleempje... glas is nogal prijzig, zeker wanneer je net begint en je dus je voorraad nog moet opbouwen. Voorlopig blijft het dus nog maar even bij lezen en hopen dat het schip met geld een keertje binnen komt varen :)
Maar mocht dat het geval zijn dan hoop ik dat mijn werkstukken net zo mooi worden als deze schalen van Valerie Adams, haar grafische stijl en gebruik van kleur vind ik echt geweldig.

Yesterday I went to "Sunday Market Amsterdam" at the Westergastfabriek in Amsterdam. First of all to meet one of my fellow beadmakers, whom I only know online via dutch glassbead forums and secondly because I simply wanted to check it out. It seemed to be a fun market with lots of visiters so I concider to participate myself next time.
Gisteren heb ik de "Sunday Market Amsterdam" in de Westergastfabriek in Amsterdam bezocht. Ten eerste omdat één van mijn "glascollega's", die ik alleen via één van de nederlandse glasforums ken, er met haar sieraden stond. Maar vooral ook om eens te zien wat voor markt het was. Het leek me een erg gezellige kunstmarkt waar veel bezoekers op af gekomen waren, dus ik overweeg serieus er zelf de volgende keer ook maar aan deel te nemen.
Ofcourse I couldn't go home empty handed and this is what I bought... a lovely rubber bracelet made by Corina Rietveld and parth of her Jugendstil inspired jewelry called Rubberely.
Er was ontzettend veel moois te zien en dus kon ik niet met lege handen naar huis. Eigenlijk moet ik zeggen zonder lege pols want dit is wat ik gekocht heb... een prachtige rubberen armband van Corina Rietveld uit haar op Jugenstil geïnspireerde sieraden-serie Rubberely.

Karna Erickson is a softiemaker who loves to transform recycled sweaters into the most beautiful figures and she absolutely is one of my favorites on Flickr. I could go on and on showing pictures of her work because I like them all, but instead I will advice you to go check her Flickr and if you have money to spend...she also has an Etsy-shop!

Today I was looking for some information in a totally different aria and instead found the website of a textile artist Lilian Taylor. I don't think I need to explain a lot...I totally love the way she combines drawings with vintage fabrics, lace and other recycled materials. Seeing work like that make my fingers tiggle to go and start working with fabrics also. Well I guess it's proof that although I love to work with glass, this will never be a replacement for my love for textile art.
Op zoek naar iets totaal anders kwam ik via via terecht op de website van textielkunstenaar" Lilian Taylor. Ik helemaal weg ben van de manier waarop zij tekenen combineert met oude textiel, kant, borduurwerk en andere gerecyclede materialen. Alleen al het feit dat bij het zien van dit soort werk mijn vingers gaan jeuken om zelf ook weer aan de gang te gaan, geeft toch wel aan dat alhoewel ik helemaal weg ben van het werken met glas dit altijd gelijkwaardig zal zijn aan mijn liefde voor textiel en tekenen.
But I think those of you who know me in real life or read this blog on a regular basis, probably already new that about me and so did Arina from Canada. She's a lady I "know" via one of the dutch glassforums. A few weeks ago I mentioned I was planning to make some kind of a mixed media cover for our old couch using vintage woolblankets, fabrics, needle work, crochet and such and look what I received last friday. A box filled with lots of vintage fabrics, doilies and other materials. Actually she spoiled me rotten and totally made my day. Thank you so much Arina you are too kind!!!
Dat laatste zal voor wie mij kent of al langere tijd dit blog volgt geen nieuws zijn en dat kan zijn voordelen hebben. Neem bijvoorbeeld Arina uit Canada die ik "ken" via één van de nederlandse glasforums. Toen ik een paar weken geleden op het forum schreef dat ik van plan was om voor onze oude bank een soort mixed media hoes te maken, van oude wollen dekens, kant, borduursels en haakwerk,schreef ze dat ze nog wel wat materiaal voor me had en kijk wat ik afgelopen week van haar ontving... een doos vol met oud textiel, gehaakte kleedjes en allerlei andere materialen. Ze heeft me echt super verwend dus bij deze dankjewel Arina, je bent echt geweldig!!
I started following Helle Jorgensen of Gooseflesh a couple of years ago. I was making pencases out of plastic yarn at the time and stumbled on her beautiful creations on Flickr. The fact that she's highly inspired by the undersea life and coral reeves is reflected in her work. She transforms plastic yarn made of discarded bags into the most amazing coral pieces and sea creatures.
Het is al weer enige jaren geleden dat ik voor het eerst het werk van Helle Jorgensen van Gooseflesh tegenkwam op Flickr. Het was in de tijd dat ik zelf ook bezig was met het haken van etui's van garen gemaakt van oude plastic tasjes. Sindsdien kijk ik regelmatig waar ze mee bezig is. De meest fantastische koraal- en zeefiguren ontstaan uit het plastic garen dat ze gebruikt en het is dan ook duidelijk te zien wat haar belangrijkste inspiratiebron is.

Amongst a lot of other things, Margareth Oomen from Resurrection fern likes to cover up stones with crochet. It's like she's expanding the natural beauty of stones. Lately she also incorporates little snaps of fabric which ads a little bit of color and makes it even more beautiful.
Ze maakt van alles, maar één van de favoriete bezigheden van Margareth Oomen van Ressurection fern is het verpakken van stenen in haakwerk. Het is alsof ze daarmee de natuurlijke schoonheid van stenen benadrukt. De laatste tijd voegt ze binnen dat haakwerk ook kleine stukjes stof toe en dat maakt het geheel in mijn ogen zelfs nog veel mooier.

I was doing a bit of blog-visiting this morning and visited Kimberley Sherrod's blog Calamity Kim. She had an item about Margaux Lange's original jewelry.
De laatste tijd is er niet zo veel van gekomen, maar vanochtend was ik weer eens een beetje aan het surfen langs een aantal van mijn favoriete blogs. Via Kimberley Sherrod's blog Calamity Kim kwam ik bij de originele sieraden van Margaux Lange terecht.

I think this jewelry is totally funny although also a bit creepy. Margaux transforms parts of Barbiedolls into jewelry framing them in sterling silver. Oh how I love the imagination and creative mind of people like her.
Haar sieraden geven een beetje ongemakkelijk gevoel, maar toch vind ik ze op één of andere manier toch ook wel heel erg grappig! Margaux neemt Barbiepoppen en gebruikt delen van de gezichten, het lijf of de ledematen en maakt daar sieraden van door ze in zilver te vatten. Ik kan echt genieten van de creativiteit van mensen zoals zij :)
Visiting Margaux's blog I stumbled upon the work of Sasja Saptenno, a dutch jewelry designer who's using (recycled) rubber for her jewelry and I think it's amazing.It definately makes a statement and If I had the money I probably would have bought the necklace on the right. Instead I think I have to be a real copycat, visit the local bike-repair, get me some old tires...
Ook Margaux heeft een weblog en daar zag ik het werk van Sasja Saptenno, een nederlandse sieradenontwerpster die vooral gebruik maakt van gerecycled rubber om haar prachtige sieraden te maken. Nu koop/draag ik normaliter niet zoveel sieraden, maar voor de rechter ketting zou ik misschien wel eens een uitzondering hebben kunnen maken als ik het geld beschikbaar had. Maar ja misschien moet ik me dit keer als een echte copycat gedragen en maar eens een bezoek brengen aan de plaatselijke fietsenmaker om wat oude banden te halen...

Isn't this a little dreamhouse... wouldn't this be just the perfect place to withdraw from the stress of everyday life and have some quiet reflection or simply look around and enjoy the view. The beautiful ceramics from Megan Bogonovich make me start daydreaming... it's just so georgious.

This is one of the quilled snowflake ornaments I made as parth of my christmas decorations recycling the paper of an old brown shopping bag.
Dit is één van de "quilled snowflake ornaments" die onderdeel waren van mijn kerstdecoraties. Rotzooi genoeg hier in huis dus ze zijn gemaakt van een bruine papieren boodschappentas die ik nog had liggen.

Personally I think the result is not to bad for a first time quilling but it's nothing compared with the really amazing illustrations made by Yulia Brodskaya's because those are really stunning!
Helemaal niet gek voor een eerste resultaat al zeg ik het zelf. Maar ja als je dan kort daarop het werkelijk fantastische werk van Yulida Brodskaya onder ogen krijgt, die deze techniek gebruikt voor haar illustraties, dan is mijn resultaat toch echt niet meer dan een broddelwerkje. Maar goed ter verdediging, zij gebruikt dan hoogstwaarschijnlijk weer geen oud papier ;)

I have been a huge fan of Sara Lechner from the moment I found her work on Flickr a few years back. Now I've read she also published a book which surely will be a nice addition to your artbooks.
Vanaf het moment dat ik voor het eerst het werk van Sara Lechner tegenkwam op Flickr ben ik fan. Nu las ik dat ze ook een boek gepubliceerd heeft, een prachtige aanvulling voor je verzameling kunstboeken lijkt me.

I was looking for a new Diary, ofcourse I already should have bought one in november/december but I totally forgot.
I wanted to have diary from PiP studio because it definately is my absolute favorite brand of the moment. I have a notebook from them and my daughter had the schooldiary and we totally love the designs. So I have been looking everywhere, but ofcourse they are all sold out.
My last resource was this office supplies shop in Haarlem called Muijs, that's where I bought my notebook. Unfortunately they also are sold out but I found the next best thing. Although it's a total opposite from PiP because there isn't any decoration at all, I'm also a huge fan of Moleskine. I not only found a diary, I also bought a matching set of 3 small notebooks.
And in my search of inspiring decoration idea's I found a link on Monica's site about a tutorial to make fairy lights out of an egg-case.
I'm sure this will be a lovely idea to replace the christmas garland still hanging in my kitchen ;)

It's winter in Holland and I mean it really is winter.... cold and white. It even seems to have snowed in some parts and for those who like to skate on nature-ice it's heaven I believe. In my parth of the country there's no snow, the only thing we have is bone-breaking iceparths on the streets and pathways and so I'm a little uncomfortable to go by bike.
Although it's already 6 days since New Year our christmas decorations are still up. I always feel sad to get them down because it gives out livingroom such a cosy feeling. However I need to get ready to put it down eventually. So inspired by the winterweather I have been looking on the internet for inspiration to replace those decorations for some that will fit this time of year. I found the website from FriedaMaria and I sure do like their styling-ideas.
Zoals een ieder al heeft gemerkt, het is winter in Nederland. Het schijnt in sommige delen van dit kikkerlandje zelfs goed gesneeuwd te hebben voor diegene die graag op natuurijs schaatsen moet het ook hemels zijn.
In dit deel van het land echter geen sneeuw maar alleen van die botbrekend gladde stoepen en straten waardoor ik persoonlijk, na mijn ongelukje van een paar jaar geleden, niet helemaal blij op m'n fietsje stap.
Het is ook al weer 6 dagen na nieuwjaar en waar bij de meeste mensen de kerstboom op de hoek van de straat ligt en de ballen op zolder huizen, worden bij ons iedere avond nog de lichtjes in de boom aangestoken. Het lijkt wel of het ieder jaar moeilijker wordt om die extra gezelligheid weer af te breken. Het moet er natuurlijk toch wel een keer van komen en geïnspireerd door het winterse weer ben ik maar eens gaan "surfen" voor wat originele decoratie-ideetjes in winter sfeer om de kale boel weer wat op te leuken.
Ik vind de styling ideeën van FriedaMaria wel erg grappig.

I have this list of things I would like to learn one time or another. Ceramics is high on that list and that's the reason I bought a larger kiln with more possibilities instead of a small beadkiln.
Wouldn't it be nice to combine Ceramic beads or pendants with beautiful glass beads. Oh my so much idea's and so little time.
Anyway enough about my plans and ideas. A customer of mine provided a link on her new (designed by me) website of this wonderful ceramic-artist Nicky Konings. The pictures below show some of the pieces I liked most on her website, but she made it pretty difficult to choose.
Not only do I think her work is great because of the origal shapes and textures but I simply love the colors she uses. Ofcourse I could continue rambling on about what I like, but I suggest you go and check out her work yourself.

Melanie Moertel is an amazing lampworker. I love her use of color and shapes and she's able to make super thin lines... I'm totally impressed by her stringercontrol! Mine still sucks and I don't know if I will ever reach her level of control to be honest because my hands are way to shaky most of the times.
My most favorite are her "Indian Elephants"-beads:
Joan Miller makes lovely beads from porcelain. A lot of them are combined with beautiful sterling silver findings from Penny Michelle.

Jennifer makes the most beautiful monsters out of recycled cotton fabrics and that alone would already be a reason to put her on my favorites-list! Ofcourse I also think her monsters are totally adorable and fun!
